A book by Alexandr Kulpin

Against the Current

A story about choice. About life. About oneself. And about what remains truly important.

About the Book

Against the Current is not the story of a perfect person, nor is it an attempt to teach others how to live. It is an honest conversation about choice, inner contradictions, mistakes, loss, and events after which the familiar world can no longer be seen in the same way.

In this book, I tell the story of my journey, from childhood and my first decisions to entrepreneurship, the search for meaning, faith, doubt, and difficult trials in life. There is no carefully constructed legend of flawless success here. There is life as it truly is: with turns, falls, new beginnings, and questions whose answers sometimes take years to find.

This book is about how not to lose yourself under the pressure of circumstances, opinions, and ready-made scripts. It is about why the only path back to yourself sometimes begins with the decision to go not where the current carries you, but where your inner sense of truth leads.

Why I Wrote This Book

I did not plan to write this book as a textbook, a manifesto, or a final summary. It grew from the need to bring together what had lived inside me for a long time: experience, questions, decisions, mistakes, losses, and conclusions that could never fit into a short post or conversation.

I wrote it over a year and a half. Sometimes I stopped, returned to the text, and lived through what I was writing about once again. At some point, the book stopped being only my story. I saw that it contained questions almost everyone encounters: who am I, why do I live this way, where do other people’s expectations end, and where does my own path begin?

This book is dedicated to my son, Sasha. Because of him, many things in my life took on a different meaning, and words that once seemed important were tested by their true cost.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for anyone who has ever felt that they were living someone else’s life. For those who have gone through change, started over, lost their bearings, or tried to understand what remained important after their former goals no longer had meaning.

It may resonate with entrepreneurs, parents, people going through a period of inner transformation, and anyone who no longer wants to move through life on autopilot. Not because the book offers ready-made answers, but because it may help you ask your own questions more honestly.

Topics in the Book

Against the Current brings together a personal story, reflections on human nature, and an attempt to understand questions that rarely have simple answers.

  • choice and personal responsibility;
  • childhood, family, and the events that shape a person;
  • entrepreneurship, money, success, and the price of decisions;
  • loss, pain, and life after the world has changed;
  • faith, religion, the Universe, and the search for meaning;
  • human nature and the reasons we are so different;
  • freedom from other people’s scripts;
  • returning to yourself;
  • love that remains stronger than time.
Sometimes, to find the way back to yourself, you have to go against the current.

A Personal Note from the Author

I do not know on which page of this book you will recognize yourself. Perhaps in the story of a choice. Perhaps in the reflections on faith. Perhaps in the moment when life makes you leave your former self behind and learn to live again.

I did not write this book to persuade you to see the world through my eyes. I wrote it so that, for at least a few minutes, you might stop and look at your own life more honestly.

Take from it not my answers, but your own questions. Sometimes that is where the real journey begins.

I made the book available for free because I want it to reach those who need it right now. No registration, subscription, or obligations.
